Recovering after Composite Filling

Now that you’ve undergone a procedure to get composite fillings, here are a few things to bear in mind:

  • It’s a good idea to check if the local anesthetic has worn off before you have a hot or cold drink; remember you may feel sensitivity. We also make sure that you do not bite yourself and cause any injury to your lips, cheeks or to the tongue
  • Swallowing and eating when numb can be challenging, so please be careful!
  • The fillings are solidified and hard when you leave the dentist’s office, this means that you can eat on them as soon as your mouth does not feel numb
  • You may feel that the fillings are gritty, this is completely normal and should go away after a couple of days

If in doubt, call us!

Teeth can be sensitive after operation

It is normal to feel some sensitivity in your teeth after the procedure. This is a typical reaction from your nerves. The sensitivity from white fillings may last from a handful of weeks to months, it really depends from patient to patient.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Stop use of whitening toothpaste or any other whitening products until you don’t feel sensitive; the ingredients in these products can make things more delicate
  • It may help to use toothpaste that protects against sensitivity (i.e. Sensodyne, Crest for sensitive teeth) until your teeth feel normal
  • If your bite does not seem normal or feels ‘off’, please do not wait for it to suffer any wear and tear, contact us to have adjustments made to the filling
