What Happens During Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy follows a logical sequence, and once you understand the steps, the whole thing feels a lot less mysterious.
Examination, Imaging, and Treatment Planning
We take a detailed look at your tooth using advanced digital X-rays. This gives us a diagnosis we can plan around.
Numbing and Isolating the Tooth
Before treatment begins, we numb the tooth and surrounding tissues using a proper local anesthetic.
Removing the Infected Pulp
The infected tooth pulp is carefully removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned.
Filling and Sealing the Canals
Once the canals are clean and properly shaped, we fill them with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, paired with a dental sealer. They close off the space completely, so there's no room left for bacteria to move back in.
Final Filling or Dental Crown
The opening we used to access the canals gets sealed with a filling right away. For many teeth, especially molars that do a lot of chewing work, we recommend a crown afterward. We'll let you know at your visit whether your tooth needs one.

Root canals have an old reputation that hasn’t kept up with modern dentistry. The truth is, the infection is what causes the pain, not the treatment. Once we numb the tooth with local anaesthetic, you won’t feel any pain. Some soreness afterward is normal, but it’s mild and temporary.
What to Expect After Treatment
Here are a few things to be prepared for when you get home:
- Numbness usually wears off within a few hours, and it’s best to avoid chewing until then so you don’t accidentally bite your cheek or tongue.
