Common Dentistry Laser Procedures

Laser dentistry procedures have been around since 1989, but their high costs made these treatment options inaccessible to a lot of people. However, the advances in research and technology have helped reduce the costs of the laser equipment and treatment procedures which has helped bring laser dentistry to the mainstream.

Despite the many advantages that laser treatment procedures hold over traditional drills, not many people have a clear understanding of what dental conditions make laser dentistry the ideal solution.

Let’s take a look at some of the most common laser dentistry procedures so you can get a better understanding of this incredibly effective procedure.

LASER DENTISTRY PROCEDURES

  1. Helps treat Hypersensitivity
One of the clearest indications that you need to see a dentist is being overly sensitive to hot or cold drinks. This condition is known as Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) and occurs quite a lot more frequently than you may think. The hyper-pain sensation is caused by the exposure of dentin, one of the underlying layers of a tooth. This is commonly caused by receding gingival recession and the wearing down of your teeth; two conditions that can lead to much bigger problems down the line.Treating dentin sensitivity with lasers has shown to cause an immediate analgesic effect on the tissue and leaves no inflammation like traditional methods tend to do.
  2. Treatment of Tooth Decay
A dental cavity occurs when your tooth has an area that is permanently damaged and can eventually develop into holes in various parts of your teeth enamel. Although cavities are more common in children, anyone can develop them over time and of left untreated can ultimately lead to the loss of your tooth.Lasers can be used to remove the decayed sections of the enamel and can also be used to prepare the surrounding enamel before the dentist inserts the filling material.
  3. Gum Disease (Gingivitis and Periodontitis)
Gum disease is commonly caused by bacterial infections and can potentially develop to a much more serious condition known as periodontitis. Both conditions, however, can lead to tooth loss and can significantly cause pain and discomfort in your mouth when eating and/or brushing your teeth.Traditional methods of treatment consists of a procedure known as scaling and root planing (SRP). This technique includes cleaning of the dirt and bacteria off the surfaces of teeth and their roots which become exposed due to gum recession.Lasers can be used to directly target the infected pocket to kill off the damaged tissue and bacteria. In addition, lasers can target stem cells that contain blood in the pocket, and in effect, helps create a sela of tissues against the root section of your tooth.
  4. Gummy Smiles
Losing gum tissue is a big concern, but so is having too much gum tissue. This is a condition known as a gummy smile. This can lead to the person having a less attractive smile and being more self-conscious.The laser surgery process entails using the laser to remove the excess gum tissue and reshape the underlying bone. The process is pain and vibration free and the recovery period involves minimal swelling and bleeding.
