What is Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a new government-funded program that helps make dental care more affordable for Canadians. If you qualify, CDCP can cover part or all of the costs of some dental services, such as cleanings, fillings, x-rays, and more.
Once enrolled, the welcome package you receive from Sun Life will include the date you can start seeing an oral health provider. Appointments can only be scheduled on or after your coverage start date.
CDCP Renewals are Open
CDCP Renewals are open for the 2026-2027 benefit year from April 15 to June 1, 2026. Your current coverage is effective until June 30, 2026, but will end on that date if you do not renew in time.
As a CDCP member, you must renew your coverage every year to confirm you still meet the eligibility requirements.
Renewing your Coverage after the Renewal Period
If you do not renew by the deadline, your coverage ends on June 30, 2026. You can submit a new application later, but:
- There will be a gap in your coverage until it is approved again.
- Dental care received during this gap will not be covered or reimbursed.
Eligibility Review
You must attest that you do not have access to dental insurance. The CDCP verifies this by reviewing tax records (T4/T4A) submitted by employers or pension plan administrators.
- If you provide false information, you and your family may be removed from the plan.
- If found ineligible, you will be required to repay any amounts claimed for services.
What you Need to Renew
You will need to confirm or update the following for each applicant:
- Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- CDCP member ID
- Full name and Date of birth
- Home and mailing address
- List of government dental coverage (if applicable)
- Confirmation that your previous year’s tax returns were filed
Who Can Renew:
To renew your CDCP coverage, you must meet all four requirements:
No Access to Private Dental Insurance
This includes coverage through:
- Employer or family member benefits (including health and wellness accounts).
- Pension plans (including federal, provincial, and territorial government employer pension plans).
- Professional or student organizations.
- Insurance purchased by you, a family member, or through a group plan.
Note: This applies even if you decide not to take it, have to pay a premium, or do not use it.
Retirement Exception: You may be eligible if you’re retired and you opted out of your dental insurance through your pension plan before December 11, 2023, and cannot opt back in.
Tax Returns
You and your spouse or common-law partner must have filed your tax returns in Canada for the previous year.
Income and Residency
Your adjusted family net income is less than $90,000 and you are a Canadian resident for tax purposes.
If you Have Dental Coverage Through Government Social Programs
If you have coverage through a provincial, territorial, or federal government social program, you could still qualify. Your coverage will be coordinated between the plans to avoid duplications or gaps.
Renewal Your CDCP Now!
CDCP members must re-verify eligibility by June 1, 2026
Who Is Eligible for CDCP?
You may qualify for CDCP if you:

- Are a Canadian resident
- Have filed your taxes last year

Frequently Asked Questions
Are you looking for more information about the Comprehensive Dental Care Plan (CDCP)? We understand that navigating the details of dental coverage can be confusing, so we’ve compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions.
No. CDCP is only for people who don’t have any private dental insurance. If you’re covered through work, school, or a family member’s plan, you won’t be eligible, even if you don’t currently use it.
CDCP covers basic and preventive dental services, such as routine exams and cleanings, x-rays, fillings, root canals, tooth extractions, some dentures, and oral surgery. More complex treatments (like crowns) may be covered only if medically necessary and approved in advance.
The CDCP has been rolled out in phases, with applications for all eligible Canadians aged 18 – 64 opened in May 2025, and coverage starting as early as June 1, 2025. Once you receive your approval letter and membership card from Sun Life, which includes your CDCP ID number and coverage start date, you can book appointments with a participating dental office.
Yes! Express Walk Dental proudly welcomes CDCP patients. We’ll explain your coverage, bill CDCP directly, and make sure you know exactly what’s covered. If any extra costs apply, we’ll tell you before starting treatment, no surprises.
