Can Your Tooth Be Restored in One Visit?
A one-visit crown may be an option when a tooth needs full coverage but can still be restored. The tooth, gums, bite and any infection or existing restoration still need to be assessed.
Cracked or Broken Tooth
A crack can weaken the tooth and make full coverage necessary.
Decayed or Weakened Tooth
Decay may leave too little strong tooth structure for a filling.
Root Canal-Treated Tooth
A treated tooth may need extra protection from future damage.

What is a One-Visit Crown?
A crown is a custom-fitted cap that goes over a damaged tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape and rebuilds the chewing surface.
Creating a dental crown used to require two visits over a couple of weeks, but it can now be handled in one sitting. The crown is designed and fabricated, and the dentist bonds it in place, all in a single appointment. “CEREC crown” refers to the specific CAD/CAM system that makes this possible.
How CEREC Makes Same-Day Crowns Possible
We scan your tooth with a small digital wand. That scan feeds into design software, which shows the crown’s shape and bite on screen. After approval, an in-office milling unit carves the crown from a solid ceramic block.
It’s the same basic idea as a traditional crown. Just the lab work happens in the next room.

How We Create Your Crown in One Visit
Examination & Preparation
Using advanced examination tools, we assess your teeth to see how much natural structure is left. Then, we reshape the tooth slightly to make room for the crown. This step is the same for both digital and traditional crowns.
Digital Impression and 3D Crown Design
We use an intraoral scanner to capture a detailed digital model of your tooth and the teeth around it. Then, the crown's shape and bite are mapped out on screen. This part usually takes just a few minutes.
In-Office Ceramic Milling
Once the design is finalized, we send it to our in-office milling unit, which carves the crown from a ceramic block. This usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes.
Fit, Shade, and Bite Adjustment
When the crown comes out of the mill, we check these factors against your tooth:
We make small adjustments until everything sits comfortably.
Permanent Crown Placement
If we're happy with the fit, we bond and cement the crown onto the tooth and polish it. At that point, it's a permanent restoration, not a placeholder. You can eat and speak normally after any numbness wears off.
One-Visit Crowns vs. Traditional Dental Crowns
| Factor | One-Visit CEREC Crown | Traditional Crown |
|---|---|---|
| Appointments needed | ✓ 1 | 2, sometimes more |
| Temporary crown | ✓ Not needed | Worn between visits |
| Impression method | ✓ Digital scan | Physical putty impression |
| Lab involvement | ✓ Made in-office | Sent to an outside dental lab |
| Typical timeline | ✓ Completed same day | Usually 2 to 3 weeks total |
Are You a Candidate for a Same-Day Crown?
Most patients with a cracked or heavily filled tooth are good candidates for a same-day crown. That said, when you need care for multiple teeth, or you have complex bite issues, a lab-made crown may work better for you. This way, a ceramist can hand-finish details milling alone can’t fully replicate.
Benefits of One-Visit Crowns
- One appointment instead of two or three separate visits.
- No temporary crown, so there's nothing to worry about coming loose in between.
- No traditional impression and putty-and-tray process.
- Your crown never has to travel to an outside lab.
- You leave with the permanent crown already in place.

Yes. Using CEREC technology, we scan, design, mill, and bond your crown within a single appointment, without sending anything to an outside lab.
Most same-day crown appointments run a couple of hours, since scanning, milling, and adjustments all happen in sequence.
They can be, for many patients. Where very fine, layered aesthetics are needed, we’ll discuss whether a milled crown or a lab-finished option suits your smile better.
Yes. Crowns are commonly placed after root canal treatment to protect and strengthen the tooth, often still in one visit.
The area is numbed before preparation, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain. Mild sensitivity afterward is normal and usually settles within a few days.
Many dental plans do cover crowns. Coverage depends on your specific plan, so bring your insurance details to your visit.
Complex multi-tooth cases, certain highly detailed cosmetic results, or situations needing extra lab customization sometimes call for a traditional, lab-made crown instead.
Longevity depends on the material used, the condition of the tooth, your bite, grinding habits, and how consistently you keep up with hygiene and checkups.
